West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday promised improved infrastructure in all sectors, including renovation of the government cultural complex ''Nandan'' in the city which was regularly visited by her predecessor Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
Banerjee had visited ''Nandan'' yesterday for the first time since assuming office and had ordered immediate renovation after expressing surprise at its poor condition.
The renovation work of the premier government cultural hub began today.
The ceiling boards of Nandan I, where most of the films during the prestigious annual Kolkata Film Festival are screened, had fallen off a few months ago and the theatre had been closed to spectators.
Nandan II has a defective air conditioning system.
She also promised modernising the city's traffic system by widening roads and creating underground parking places.
The road conditions of the over-crowded city could be improved without removing hawkers, she said adding roadside kiosks could be modernised to give a decent look.
Banerjee held meetings with transport and PWD officials during the day.
"I am meeting ministers and officials of one department after another everyday as part of the continuous process of monitoring to bring the entire system in order at the earliest possible time," she said.
