US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a call, likely aimed at finalizing a deal related to TikTok and addressing ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.
"Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by telephone with US President Donald Trump," state broadcaster CCTV and the Xinhua news agency said.
The call was the first between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping since June and comes as both sides consider a potential trade agreement and negotiations over the Chinese-owned short-video app TikTok, which faces a US ban unless its parent company ByteDance sells its American assets.
The discussion also occurred amid ongoing standoffs over trade restrictions impacting key sectors, including semiconductors and rare earths.
Ahead of the call, Donald Trump told Fox News that the two sides were “very close to deals on all of it," adding that his relationship with China was “very good" and that “it sounds like they’ve approved TikTok."
