US President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to deploy the National Guard in Washington, DC, and raised the possibility of a federal takeover of the city's policing, citing a surge in crime and a recent assault involving a staffer connected to Elon Musk.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the Trump administration is preparing to boost the federal law enforcement presence in the capital on Thursday and Friday, following the weekend attack on a prominent former Department of Government Efficiency staffer.
"We have a capital that's very unsafe," Trump told reporters outside the White House. "We have to run DC. This has to be the best-run place in the country."
Trump has previously signaled interest in taking direct control of Washington, DC’s law enforcement.
"We just almost lost a young man -- a beautiful, handsome guy that got the hell knocked out of him," Trump said, referring to the recent assault. He later shared a graphic image of Coristine, visibly bloodied on his face, torso, and limbs, referring to him by the nickname "Big Balls."
"We're going to beautify the city. We're going to make it beautiful," Trump continued. "And what a shame -- the rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings, and everything else. We're not going to let it. And that includes bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly, too."
