North Korea is believed to be constructing its biggest warship ever and it is likely to be a guided-missile frigate (FFG), equipped with advanced missile systems designed for multi-role naval operations, reports CNN, citing satellite images.
The under-construction warship is reportedly twice the size of any warship that is part of North Korea’s naval fleet. This comes amid reports suggesting a military modernisation drive undertaken by Kim Jog Un.
According to the report, the images, taken by Maxar Technologies and Planet Labs taken on April 6, show the vessel under construction at the Nampo shipyard on North Korea’s west coast, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of the capital Pyongyang.
The CNN report also quoted an analysis by Joseph Bermudez Jr. and Jennifer Jun at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, according to which, the FFG is approximately 140 metres in length – the largest warship manufactured in North Korea.
The Kim regime has been engaged in a rapid modernization of its armed forces, developing a range of new weapons and testing intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach almost anywhere in the United States.
