New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has signalled a new approach towards India. In what can be termed as the major shift in the diplomatic stance, Carney has said that he is committed towards ‘rebuilding ties with India.’
In a recent media interaction, when asked about his views on the ties with New Delhi, the new Liberal Party leader said that Ottawa will aim to diversify ‘trading ties with like-minded countries.’ He also added that there is a need of ‘shared sense of values around commercial ties.’
The 59-year-old, who won the race to replace Justin Trudeau, garnered 85.9 percent votes. Analysts say that the new Canadian PM has better understanding of bilateral trade since his stints as Governor at Bank of Canada and Bank of England.
The diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Ottawa worsened to all-time low in 2023 September when then Canadian administration under Justin Trudeau had claimed that some Indian citizens had alleged role in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Though Carney had more conciliatory tone for India, he remained very aggressive on the issue of tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump. In his victory speech, Carney didn’t mince words and said that “Americans should make no mistake...in trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”'
