The October 14, 2025 is almost here. In just three, the Windows 10 operating system will reach its end of support cycle and Microsft has confirmed that it will stop offering any new features, support and security support to almost over millions of PCs globally running on Window 10 operating system.
However, it is worth noting that, the PCs will continue to function, but Microsoft will stop providing security patches, bug fixes, and technical support and this raises big concern for hacks, attacks and more. Having said that, the company has dropped some options for these users and have asked them to take necessary actions in case they want to keep their data secure and receive new updates and features as well.
Windows 10 Extended security updates
To help users who wish to continue using Windows 10, Microsoft is introducing the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. The ESU coverage will run from October 15, 2025, to October 13, 2026, and can be renewed annually for up to three years.
For personal PC users, there are three ways to enroll directly through Settings:
• Windows Backup – Free enrollment for devices using Microsoft’s backup service.
• Microsoft Rewards points – Free option using earned points.
• Direct payment – Subscription priced at $30 per year.
For business customers, ESU will cost $61 per device per year, while cloud or virtual environments such as Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Machines will receive the same updates at no extra cost.
Microsoft also confirmed that Security Intelligence Updates for Microsoft Defender Antivirus will continue until October 2028, ensuring essential protection for users who stay on Windows 10.
Upgrade to Windows 11 or Windows 365
Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11, citing key security and performance improvements. According to the company, Windows 11 devices experience 62% fewer security incidents, are up to 2.3 times faster, and deliver 50% faster workflows for organizations.
For those considering a move to the cloud, Windows 365 offers a cloud-based path to Windows 11, with 20% off for new customers.
Copilot+ PCs and new AI features
Microsoft is also promoting Copilot+ PCs, designed to provide advanced AI capabilities such as Recall, Click to Do, Cocreator in Paint, and Restyle in Photos. These devices are available from leading brands including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Surface.
Microsoft says it remains committed to ensuring a smooth and secure transition. Users can choose to enroll in ESU, upgrade to Windows 11, or move to cloud-based Windows 365 PCs. Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft, detailed the full roadmap for this transition in his recent blog post.
