WhatsApp is quietly testing two new AI-powered features that could make catching up on messages and composing replies a lot easier — especially if your chats are always buzzing.

The first feature, spotted by WABetaInfo, is AI message summarization. If you’ve missed a bunch of messages in a chat, group, or channel, WhatsApp may soon give you the option to summarize the entire thread using Meta AI. Instead of the usual “X unread messages” label, a “Summarize with Meta AI” button shows up. Tap it, and you’ll get a short, easy-to-read recap of what you missed.

This feature is still in beta testing on Android and is part of an opt-in system called Private Processing. WhatsApp says the summaries are generated in the cloud in a secure, isolated environment — no messages are stored or linked to users, and the summaries are deleted immediately after processing.

Even better, if you're chatting in a conversation with Advanced Privacy enabled, AI summaries won’t kick in at all. That means privacy and encryption stay intact, even with AI features active elsewhere.
