Testing DeepSeek: How the new Chinese AI model stacks up against ChatGPT and Google Gemini

There has been a lot of buzz around the new AI model coming out from China. Called DeepSeek, it takes on ChatGPT, Google Gemini and other generative AI models out there. The Chinese AI startup claims that it delivers comparable results to OpenAI’s o1 across various benchmarks, including mathematics, coding, and reasoning tasks. Notably, it even outperforms OpenAI’s o1 in certain areas, such as coding tasks, where it achieves a remarkable 97% success rate.

Now, coding tasks aren’t something that we asked DeepSeek to perform but we thought of checking how good it is with information on certain topics — some current and some with a slight historical perspective. The idea of this piece is to test the basic capabilities — as a research or writing tool — and not advanced ones like complex mathematics problems or get it to improve on a code. But before we compare ChatGPT and Gemini to DeepSeek, here’s how you can get access to DeepSeek’s AI model.
