OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that the company is on track to bring “well over 1 million GPUs online” by the end of 2025—a staggering number that underscores just how GPU-hungry modern AI has become. But in true Altman fashion, he followed it up with an even bolder challenge: his team now has to figure out how to 100x that.

The post on X might have sounded like a flex, but it reflects the arms race in AI infrastructure. As AI models grow in size, complexity, and capability, they demand exponentially more compute power—particularly from GPUs, which are essential for training and running large-scale neural networks.

Altman has long stressed that solving the compute bottleneck is central to OpenAI’s mission. Earlier this year, he reportedly sought to raise as much as $7 trillion to build out the global AI supply chain, including chip fabrication and energy infrastructure. This latest update signals that OpenAI is rapidly scaling up its hardware capabilities to stay ahead in the AI race.

Yet the comment about “figuring out how to 100x that” is where the ambition really lies. It implies not just procurement, but innovation—whether through better chip efficiency, new architectures, or breakthroughs in energy use. In essence, Altman is asking: what will it take to support AGI-level compute needs?
