Google is bringing a wave of AI upgrades to Google Photos, blending editing, creativity, and search into a smarter and more interactive experience. The company announced that iOS users in the US can now edit photos by simply describing what they want changed — using either voice or text — through the “Help me edit” option.

The AI can recognise people in photos from Google Photos’ face groups, allowing users to issue complex commands like, “Remove Riley’s sunglasses, make Engel smile, and open her eyes.” Google says the feature uses advanced facial recognition and its AI model Nano Banana to create realistic edits while maintaining the natural look of the image.

Nano Banana also powers the new AI templates — which let users transform their photos into unique styles like Renaissance portraits, cartoon strips, or even retro movie posters. These templates will be available next week on Android in both the US and India under the Create tab.

Alongside the editing tools, Google Photos has received a design refresh with a new “Ask” button. This feature lets users request information about a photo, explore related moments, or directly edit using natural language prompts. It will roll out on both Android and iOS in the U.S. first.
