Microsoft’s intentions to enter the mobile gaming market have been no secret and for years, it has contemplated launching its app store. However, after years of introducing various methods and options for everyone to enjoy video games, the tech giant now plans to introduce its mobile gaming store on the web later this year.
Microsoft to launch new Xbox Mobile Gaming Store: Key details
At the latest Bloomberg Technology Summit, Sarah Bond, President of Xbox Gaming said about the impending launch of a brand-new mobile game store in July. This app will aim -- in the long run -- to be an alternative to Google PlayStore and Apple App Store.
She also added that this gaming store will be web-based initially to "ensure accessibility on any device, in any country, free from the constraints imposed by the closed ecosystems of other app stores." Later on, Microsoft plans to go beyond the web and expand this store to other platforms and multiple countries.
It will have Xbox’s first-party games like Candy Crush by King, Minecraft, and more in its portfolio initially. However, the company plans to extend support to partners for a true cross-platform gaming experience. We can also expect popular gaming titles like Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile to be launched first in this store.
The long-term goal for Microsoft is to offer a viable alternative to Apple and Google's app stores with third-party support. Therefore, the launch of the Xbox game store on the web and other popular platforms like iOS and Android shows Microsoft's commitment to expanding its presence in the mobile gaming industry.
