The NFC Forum has announced a new certification update, NFC Certification Release 15 (CR15), which significantly extends the possible read range of NFC devices. The new standard allows certified devices to communicate at distances of up to 20mm, four times the previous 5mm limit.

According to the NFC Forum, this improvement will make everyday interactions smoother by reducing the need for precise alignment between devices. For users, that means fewer missed taps and faster, more reliable NFC-based actions such as payments or unlocking doors.

Apple is among the major members of the NFC Forum, alongside Google and other tech giants, making it likely that future iPhones and Apple Watches will adopt the new hardware standard. However, the change requires updated NFC components, so existing devices will not benefit from the extended range.

Once implemented, the upgrade could enhance how Apple’s ecosystem handles NFC interactions. For instance, iPhones or Apple Watches could unlock hotel rooms, homes, or cars equipped with NFC readers from slightly further away, eliminating the need to perfectly align the device with the reader. Features tied to HomeKit or Apple Wallet’s digital keys could also become faster and more dependable.
