Google has officially rolled out AI Mode’s Search Live feature in the United States, giving users a more interactive way to search using both video and audio. The feature, powered by Project Astra, has been in testing since July and is now widely available through the Google app.

From the top of the app, users can tap the Live icon next to the AI Mode button to enter the new interface. Once inside, the screen displays a waveform that changes depending on whether you are speaking or Google is responding. At the bottom, controls allow you to mute the microphone or switch on the video camera.

Search Live is designed to act like a real-time assistant, capable of interpreting visual and audio inputs simultaneously. Google demonstrated its usefulness in situations like learning new hobbies or troubleshooting electronic devices. For example, if you want to master the art of making matcha tea, you can point your phone camera at your tea set and ask what each tool does. If you are trying to set up a home theatre, you can simply point the camera at the cables and ask which one goes where, without typing model numbers or searching separately.

This multimodal approach builds on Google Lens, where Live now appears as an option alongside Search and Translate. Results are shown in a carousel format above the controls, with additional links and resources for follow-up. Users can also exit the interface using a dedicated button in the top-right corner.
