Gaming industry contributed 10% of revenue for several payment firms, impact on UPI volume and value minimal

The move may push a lot of users to international betting sites, where customers can load money through credit cards, making it harder for the government to monitor and regulate such transactions

Payment companies to feel the pinch

The central government’s proposed ban on all real-money gaming will be a setback to payment firms that facilitate half a billion transactions every month through their platforms.

According to multiple sources, the gaming industry contributed 10 per cent of the topline for multiple payment aggregators (PA), although some have a greater exposure than others. A PA allows businesses to accept multiple online payment methods through a single platform without setting up separate accounts with each bank or provider.

The larger PA firms such as Razorpay, Cashfree, PhonePe, Easebuzz and PayU are among the firms with a sizeable exposure to the online gaming industry. Most of the gaming companies or online merchants typically use multiple PA firms to route traffic to optimise efficiency and speed. Hence, most of these top PA firms is likely to see an impact on the topline.

According to two different sources, the gaming industry contributed to around 10 percent of these companies' annual revenue.
