The Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition has been postponed to 2026, the developer has confirmed. Originally slated for a 2025 release, the delay comes as little surprise with the year drawing to a close. Elden Ring has been demonstrated on the Switch 2 at events like Gamescom, but inconsistent frame rates and performance issues prompted the decision to extend development.

FromSoftware took to X (formerly Twitter) to explain the delay: “The Nintendo Switch 2 release of ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition, originally scheduled for 2025, has been postponed to 2026 due to the need for additional time to adjust the game's performance. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to users who have been awaiting the release of this title. We will continue to make adjustments to deliver the game in the best possible form, and we appreciate your understanding. Thank you for your patience.”

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been designed to handle ports of games beyond the capabilities of the original Switch, launching with titles such as Split Fiction and Cyberpunk 2077, which ran smoothly and showcased the console’s performance potential. Star Wars: Outlaws was released last month and also demonstrates the hardware’s capabilities.

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition will require additional optimisation to reach a comparable technical standard. The 2026 release will include the base game along with the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, ensuring players receive a polished experience on Nintendo’s latest console.
