Scientists have mapped large ancient drainage systems across the Martian surface. The study identifies previously unknown connections between valleys, lakes and canyons. Findings suggest Mars once had complex, planet-wide water circulation patterns. The discovery reshapes our understanding of ancient Martian climate history.

Researchers located 19 major clusters of rivers, lakes and sediments. Sixteen of these clusters link together forming large drainage basins. These systems resemble Earth’s river networks in scale and connectivity. Most basins occupy small surface areas but carry significant eroded material.
