Oscars 2021 Highlights: The wait is over for the 93rd Academy Awards and Hollywood's biggest night of the year. The 2021 Oscars took place earlier today. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Oscars were organised two months later than usual this year. With COVID-19 norms in place, there was a limit on the number of attendees. Unlike previous years, there wasn't a traditional audience, although there was an attempt to host a red carpet show and nominees attending the event in person. Heading into the ceremony, there were a few clear front-runners in major categories like best picture and best director, but the race was still considered wide open in others, like best actress. The ceremony aired with a look and feel like no others - devoid of the usual comedy and musical performances but chock full of lengthy oratory from the winners. Performances of the five Oscar-nominated best original songs were relegated to pre-recorded presentations broadcast during a two-hour pre-show ahead of the main event on the Disney-owned ABC network. One of the greatest changes from traditional Oscar presentations was a marked expansion in the length of speeches given by the winners, who normally are "played" off by the orchestra if their thank-yous run past 45 seconds.

McDormand kissed her director-husband, Joel Coen, and rose from their table inside Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to make her way to the stage for one of the shortest speeches of the night. Following one of the most consequential court cases in recent US history, Hollywood wasted no time in reflecting on the state of race relations and police use of force in Sunday's Academy Awards show. The theme was revisited several more times, injecting politics into a broadcast seen around the world.
"I have to be honest, if things had gone differently this past week in Minneapolis, I might have traded in my heels for marching boots," Regina King, the presenter who opened the show, said at the start of the broadcast.
She was referring to the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, found guilty by a jury of all three charges in the death of George Floyd: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter.
The case has rocked the United States ever since cellphone video of the incident on May 25, 2020, went viral. The video showed Chauvin, a white veteran of the police force, pushing his knee into the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man in handcuffs, for more than nine minutes. (Reuters)

Anthony Hopkins was announced as 'Oscar 2021 Best Actor' at the 93rd Academy Awards. The award was given to him for his role in the movie 'The Father'. It's the second Oscar for Hopkins and comes nearly 30 years after his first in 1992, for playing Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. He's been nominated four times since without a win. Hopkins was not on hand to accept the award.

Although in the US the event will take place on Sunday night, in India the timing is Monday, 5:30 am to 8:30 am. The social media pages of The Academy will be doing the live updates too. Star Movies and Star World will also repeat telecast the ceremony at 8:30 pm on Monday.

It's a year of multiple firsts at this year's Oscars, the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony for the highest achievement in film. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on April 25. Emerald, Fennel is the first woman to be nominated best director for her feature film debut ("Promising Young Woman"). Red carpet glam was back on April 25 at the Oscars with Diane Warren and Leslie Odom Jr kicking off the pandemic era's first big parade of fashion in looks of white and award-worthy gold in Los Angeles.Warren served up a Valentino tuxedo in bright white with a sequin turtleneck, all by Valentino, while fellow nominee Odom shined in a glistening gold double-breasted tux gold shirt included from Brioni. A small Swarovski frog adorned her collar.
Odom walked the carpet with spouse Nicolette Robinson. They recently welcomed a second child.
Emerald Fennell, the pregnant best director nominee for Promising Young Woman, smiled bright in a flowing spring green and pink gown. Lately, she's been making up personas for her outfits. She topped off the look with sparkly lilac eye shadow.
The 9-year-old star of Minari, Alan Kim, vamped on the carpet in his black shorts suit with high black socks, including one with horizontal white stripes.
