Bengaluru's QR code metro ticketing system surpasses 25 lakh monthly users within a year of launch

Picking up pace steadily since its launch in November 2022, now around 15% of Bengaluru Metro users now opt for QR code ticketing.

The QR code Metro ticketing system in Bengaluru, the tech capital of India, is gaining popularity as monthly users have surpassed the 25-lakh mark for the first time, in just a little a year from when the service was first offered.

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) records show a consistent rise in QR code users (see graphic), going from 2.13 lakh at its launch in November 2022 to 5 lakh in January 2023, 10 lakh in June 2023 and 25.9 lakh in December 2023.

In October 2023, Bengaluru's entire 43-km Purple Line, connecting Whitefield in the east to Challaghatta in the west, was opened for passenger services. This also contributed to an increase in the Metro's daily ridership, as well as the adoption of QR-code services.
