Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced free meals in Amma canteens across Chennai.

After days of heavy downpours, the rains finally eased across most parts of northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on Wednesday. Residents welcomed the break as relief work continued in affected areas.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced free meals in Amma canteens across Chennai on October 16 and 17 to support the poor and those impacted by the rain. Stalin, in a post on 'X', mentioned that relief efforts were ongoing in full swing in rain-affected regions, particularly in Chennai.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has set up relief centres for residents in low-lying areas, providing shelter and food for those displaced by the heavy rainfall. The state's disaster response teams are extending all necessary support to affected families.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression over the Bay of Bengal now lies 360 km east-southeast of Chennai, 390 km east of Puducherry, and 450 km southeast of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. The system is expected to move west-northwest and make landfall between Puducherry and Nellore, near Chennai, early on October 17.

On Tuesday, intermittent heavy rains lashed Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu. However, the downpour tapered off by late evening, offering much-needed respite to residents.
