In a major boost for India's light combat aircraft programme, General Electric has delivered the third F404 engine to Hindustan Aeronautics.
According to news agency ANI, the aerospace firm is also slated to receive the fourth F404 engine later this month. The development comes a month after the US firm successfully delivered the second F404 to the state-run company leading the production of the light combat jets.
While significant, the delivery timeline remains a cause of concern for the Indian Air Force as it has led to delays in the LCA project. As of now, HAL is scheduled to receive 11 GE-404 engines by the end of the current fiscal.
The IAF had placed an order for 83 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets, following which the defence ministry also cleared the proposal for the acquisition of 97 more of these aircraft. At present, Tejas Mark 1 is operational in two IAF squadrons-No. 18, the Flying Bullets, and No. 45, the Flying Daggers.
Tejas Mark 1A is the upgraded version of Tejas Mark 1. It should be noted that the delivery of GE F404-IN20 engines is running behind schedule. With the current lag, there has been a delay of nearly two years compared to the original timeline.
Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and his predecessors have repeatedly flagged the issue. The situation has gained greater attention in the wake of Operation Sindoor Strikes, which underscored the urgent need to strengthen India's air defence.
