The Election Commission of India (ECI) is scheduled to announce the election schedule for the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Tuesday at 2 pm. With the term of the current 70-member assembly set to expire on February 23, the elections must take place before that date to establish a new government.
The announcement from the ECI will signal the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, the schedule was revealed on January 6, polling occurred on February 8, and the results were counted on February 11.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won 67 and 62 seats in the 2015 and 2020 elections respectively, is seeking a third consecutive win. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which secured only a handful of seats in the past two elections, and the Congress, which was ousted after 15 years in power, are contesting the elections separately this time around.
Though AAP and Congress joined forces for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, the two parties will go head-to-head in the upcoming Assembly polls.
Delhi's assembly elections have traditionally been held in a single phase.
