India is conducting COVID-19 tests at a rate of 875 per million population per day, which is more than six times the figure recommended by the WHO,LokSabhawas informed on Wednesday. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended testing of 0.14 samples per day per 1,000 population or 140 tests per day per million population, Union Minister of State for HealthAshwiniChoubeysaid in a written reply inLokSabha.
In response to another question,Choubeysaid that average test conducted by a district in a day is 1,053. "Presently, the rate of COVID-19 test conducted per 1,000 persons in India is 0.875 test per day (as on September19)," he said in response to a question on whether the rate of tests is commensurate with testing levels in countries with similar number of active COVID-19 cases.
On whether thegovernmentis tracking the testing numbers at the district level, the minister said that tests conducted for detection of COVID-19 are being reported to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data portal by laboratories, including the details of district where the sample was collected and tested. Bangladesh fast bowler Abu Jayed has tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of their tour of Sri Lanka, the country's cricket board (BCB) said on Wednesday. "Pace bowler Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi has reported positive for COVID-19. He will receive treatment in isolation for COVID as per guidelines and will undergo further tests in due course," BCB physician Debashis Chowdhury said in a statement. The Board said Jayed is the only one to have returned positive out of the 27 cricketers who were tested for the contagious disease. "Samples were collected from 27 cricketers called up to the Bangladesh Team Skill Camp with test results of 26 returning negative," BCB said. Jayed has featured in nine Tests for Bangladesh, taking 24 wickets and is a vital member of the touring Bangladesh team which is scheduled to play a three-Test series in Sri Lanka beginning October 23, subject to agreement on the number of days that the visiting team has to stay in quarantine. Opener Saif Hassan had also tested positive for COVID-19 on September 9 but has recovered since.(PTI)

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, India has kick-started a "science diplomacy" initiative by launching aprogrammeto strengthen the capacity of clinical trial research of vaccines inneighbouringcountries, the Department of Biotechnology said on Wednesday.
The first online orientation to this trainingprogrammewas conducted on September 22 and it was attended by representatives from Nepal, Maldives, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan.
"Keeping with the principles outlined by our science diplomacy initiatives, theDBThas initiated the first phase of the training program to strengthen clinical trial research capacity forneighbouringcountries'' in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs," a statement by the department said.
The trainingprogrammewhich will extend for about six to eight weeks will see participation of investigators, epidemiologists, clinicians and representatives from different departments from Nepal, Maldives, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan.
The Department of Biotechnology, through the India Centric Epidemic Preparedness (Ind-CEPI) mission for rapid vaccine development and supporting Indian vaccine development which is aligned with the Global Initiative of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), aims to strengthen the development of vaccines and associated competencies/technologies for the diseases of epidemic potential in India, the statement said.
