The Supreme Court on August 1 affirmed that states have the constitutional authority to create sub-classifications within SCs to provide reservations for castes that are more socially and educationally disadvantaged.

At a press conference, Mayawati stated, "The sub-classification of people within Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) has been permitted, our party doesn't agree with it at all."

BSP chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati expressed strong disagreement with the recent Supreme Court ruling allowing sub-classification within Scheduled Castes (SCs).

At a press conference, Mayawati stated, "The sub-classification of people within Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) has been permitted, our party doesn't agree with it at all."

The Supreme Court on August 1 affirmed that states have the constitutional authority to create sub-classifications within SCs to provide reservations for castes that are more socially and educationally disadvantaged.

Mayawati argued that the atrocities suffered by SCs and STs have been experienced collectively as a group, and sub-classifying them would be unjust. "Because the atrocities faced by the people of SCs and STs have been faced as a group and this group is equal in which it would not be right to do any kind of sub-classification," she said.
