Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on August 17 met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek more financial support for the debt-ridden state. This was the Andhra CM's first meeting with the prime minister since the Union Budget.
At the meeting, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief thanked PM Modi for the key announcements the Government made for the state, including the Rs 15,000 crore funding allotted to develop the new capital, news agency PTI reported quoting sources.
The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister discussed the state's financial status in details with the PM and urged him to pledge enhanced central support to help it overcome fiscal challenges, boost economic activity and increase the state's GDP.
As per official data, Andhra's public debt has gone up from 31.02 percent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in 2019-20 to 33.32 percent in 2023-24, indicating worsening fiscal health over the last five years.
The TDP, with its 16 Lok Sabha MPs, is a key constituent of Prime Minister Modi-led NDA government.
Naidu is likely to meet Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on his second day of the visit to the national capital.
