Tata Power has welcomed the order of the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, allowing it to distribute power across South Mumbai. "Tata Power welcomes the appellate tribunal's ruling in distributing power across South Mumbai.

We look forward to the opportunity of serving a wider customer base in Mumbai," the company said in a statement here today. Incidentally, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), which is run by Brihamumbai Municipal Corporation, had challenged the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission's (MERC) decision to allow the private player to supply power in South Mumbai, as well as develop its distribution system.

BEST, earlier, enjoyed monopoly in power distribution in the island city. The Appellate Tribunal had rejected BEST's plea on April 4, saying that it was against the spirit of the concerned law which seeks to promote competition in the electricity sector.
