Drinking water is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. Water plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and nutrient absorption. Staying hydrated helps keep the skin healthy, supports kidney function, and aids in detoxification. It's important to drink water throughout the day, ideally in small sips, and to pay attention to your body’s hydration needs, particularly during physical activity or hot weather. Balanced water intake not only quenches thirst but also ensures that your body operates efficiently, contributing to better energy levels, cognitive function, and overall vitality. However, one must avoid drinking water while standing. Here are seven reasons why it might be harmful, according to Delhi-based gastroenterologist Dr Harsh Rawal.

Impaired digestion: Drinking water while standing can disrupt the digestive process. When standing, your body is tense, causing the water to pass through the digestive tract too quickly. This rush can lead to improper breakdown and absorption of nutrients, potentially leading to digestive issues like bloating and discomfort over time.

Kidney function: When water is consumed rapidly in a standing position, it bypasses the necessary filtration process in the kidneys, placing extra strain on these vital organs. Over time, this strain may lead to reduced kidney efficiency and increase the risk of kidney stones or other renal issues as the body struggles to manage the sudden influx of fluids.

Joint and bone health: Traditional beliefs suggest that standing while drinking water can disturb the fluid balance in the body, leading to potential joint and bone problems. The rapid intake of water in this position may contribute to the accumulation of fluids in the joints, possibly exacerbating conditions like arthritis or causing other musculoskeletal issues due to improper hydration practices.
