The prevalence of myopia among Indian children has escalated markedly over the years, particularly in urban areas. From 4.44 percent in 1999, it surged to 21.15 percent in 2019, with projections indicating further increases to 31.89 percent by 2030. According to him, some of the factors include smartphone and computer usage. Studies indicate that the use of electronic devices by myopic children is associated with increased exposure to blue light, contributing to eye strain and macular degeneration. The issue is further exacerbated by a decrease in outdoor activities and pollutants in the environment.
