Conception begins with ovulation, when a mature egg is released from a woman's ovary. This egg travels through the Fallopian tube, where it may encounter sperm. During intercourse, sperm are ejaculated into the female reproductive tract, navigating through the cervix and uterus to reach the fallopian tubes.

Fertilisation occurs if a sperm successfully penetrates the egg's outer layer, merging their genetic materials to form a zygote. This single-cell zygote begins rapid division, becoming a blastocyst. The blastocyst travels to the uterus, where it implants into the uterine lining, marking the start of pregnancy.
