Due in large part to positive reviews and a lot of word-of-mouth, Thudarum, the captivating Malayalam crime thriller starring Mohanlal and Shobana, has been doing well since it opened in theatres on April 25, 2025.
With its compelling plot and stirring performances, Tharun Moorthy's film has struck a chord with viewers in Kerala and beyond. But just as the movie was starting to do well at the box office, it has regrettably become the focus of a piracy dispute.
OnManorama reported that a pirated version of Thudarum was shown on a tourist bus during the day. The incident happened as the car was making its way from Malappuram to the picturesque hill station of Vagamon.
A student on the bus recorded the movie being shown after noticing the unlawful screening. The incident gained more public attention after the video was shared with actor Binu Pappu on Facebook.
The same report claims that M. Renjith, the film's producer, is extremely upset about the unauthorised leak. He has now made the decision to take legal action against those responsible after being horrified by the obvious act of piracy.
Renjith is reportedly taking the situation very seriously in order to preserve the integrity of the movie and the industry as a whole, even though more information regarding the ongoing investigation is still unknown.
In Thudarum, Mohanlal plays Shanmugham, also called Benz, a mild-mannered taxi driver who leads a peaceful life in the charming town of Ranni with his wife Lalitha (played by the always embarrassing Shobana) and their kids. His world is turned upside down when his beloved car, the centre of his livelihood, is seized by police after it is unknowingly used by a mechanic for smuggling purposes.
Prakash Varma's character, CI George Mathan, approaches Benz in a last-ditch effort to get his car back. George agrees to let Benz drive him and his group to an event in exchange for the car's release. But when the trip turns into a mission to dispose of a dead body in the forest, this seemingly harmless task takes a sinister turn. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Benz learns later that the body was actually that of his son Pavi, who had gone missing.

Grieving, Benz discovers the terrible truth: George killed Pavi because he could not stand his daughter's affair with Benz's son. Following the revelation, Benz embarks on a journey of agony, seeking retribution and justice as he starts to disentangle the network of corruption and cover-up surrounding his son’s death.
With a screenplay co-written by K. R. Sunil, Thudarum has been widely praised for its intense narrative, strong performances, and emotional depth. Despite the piracy setback, the film continues to perform strongly at the box office, reaffirming Mohanlal’s enduring star power and the public’s appetite for compelling, well-crafted cinema.
