Recently, at the trailer launch of Bad Newz, Karan Johar addressed the wave of re-releasing of films. While acknowledging the charm of revisiting beloved classics on the big screen, he tempered expectations by delivering some unfortunate news to eager fans hoping for Dharma's classics to hit theatres again anytime soon.
“I was really excited with the films coming back. I was so happy, jab Rockstar re-release hui aur itna saara pyaar mila. Instagram ke reels mein roz main dekhta tha, log jo cult film hai thi – Rockstar, usko itna pyaar aur mohabbat mil rahi thi,” Karan said.
He continued, “I feel ye jo phenomenon shuru hua hai, films re-releasing again, I think it’s fantastic. A whole generation has grown up watching certain films.”
Talking about K3G, he said, “I feel that when K3G completes 25 years, tab I feel we should re-release the film. I haven’t seen the film myself, I watch my films only once properly when it’s ready. I don’t watch after that. I haven’t seen the film in 23 years. When the scenes or dialogues come on reels, I watch (otherwise I haven’t watched it).”
“I would like to do it (re-release) when there’s a momentous milestone and I hope that everybody else, jiski bhi special filmein hai, jaise Zoya Akhtar ka retrospect ho ya Rockstar hai, aisa hona chahiye. We should constantly remind everybody that Hindi cinema rocks,” he concluded.
In Bollywood's current wave of nostalgia, re-releases have become a significant trend. Ranbir Kapoor's Rockstar made a triumphant return to theatres last month, packing out screenings and reigniting audience enthusiasm. Following suit, Farhan Akhtar's Lakshya has also been warmly received, adding to the revival fervour.
Meanwhile, Karan is busy with his latest venture ‘Bad Newz.’ The Anand Tiwari directed film features Vicky Kaushal, Tripti Dimri, and Ammy Virk. This marks Kaushal's second project with Tiwari after their successful collaboration on ‘Love Per Square Foot’ (2018).
