Jugnuma (also known by its English title, The Fable), starring acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee is a magical-realism drama movie directed by Raam Reddy, who previously won a National Award for his first film, Thithi.
The Fable has already been successful on the international film festival circuit. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and won awards for Best Film at the Leeds International Film Festival and a Special Jury Prize at the Mami Mumbai Film Festival.
Filmmakers of the movie have now announced that the movie will be released in theaters on September 12. They also revealed that two major figures in Indian cinema, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap, have joined the project as Executive Producers.
Set in the late 1980s, the film stars Manoj Bajpayee as Dev, a man living on a large fruit orchard in the Indian Himalayas. He begins to find trees mysteriously burnt on his land. Despite his best efforts to stop them, more fires keep breaking out. These strange events force Dev and his family to confront hidden truths about themselves. The film also features Deepak Dobriyal, Priyanka Bose, and Tillotma Shome.
Speaking about the film, Anurag Kashyap said, “I had loved Raam’s Thithi, which was so rooted and genuine, and with Jugnuma, he has created a film that feels timeless”. The director praised Bajpayee's performance as unlike anything the audience has seen before. The two had previously collaborated on the influential epic, Gangs of Wasseypur.
He further added, “"The film is deeply humane yet magical in the way it unfolds. And at the centre of it, Manoj Bajpayee delivers a performance unlike anything we’ve seen before — restrained, enigmatic, and profoundly moving. It’s a film which I am extremely proud to present it to the Indian audience.”
Executive Producer of Sikhya Entertainment Guneet Monga Kapoor said that it felt like a mirror when she fir saw Jugnuma. “It unsettled me, comforted me, and reminded me of cinema’s deepest purpose. Raam Reddy is one of the most exciting voices in Indian cinema today, and with Manoj Bajpayee and an extraordinary ensemble cast bringing his vision to life, this film feels like a modern classic in the making."

Guneet said that even in this digital era the movie has been shot on films so that every grain of color speaks adding to its timeless beauty.
Further she stated that, “I feel grateful that it resonated with global audiences before coming home to India. To have cinematic visionaries like Anurag Kashyap and Guneet Monga join us as presenters is a huge honour, and having Flip Films to distribute it gives me immense joy. The film was designed to be a larger-than-life sensory experience and it was always my dream that its sense of scale should be experienced in theatres. I cannot wait to share that cinematic world with a pan-India audience on September 12."
The film also stars Hiral Sidhu and Awan Pookot. It is produced by Prspctvs Production in collaboration with Maxmedia and Sikhya Entertainment.
Written by Varun Grover in Hindi, the film Jugnuma is set for a nationwide release in India through Flip Films.
