South Korean entertainment has been shaken this week, as beloved comedian Jo Se-ho has chosen to step back from the spotlight.
What began as a swirl of online rumours has now turned into a situation serious enough for Jo to withdraw from two of the country’s biggest variety shows — “You Quiz on the Block” and “2 Days & 1 Night.”
On Tuesday, Jo’s agency, A2Z Entertainment, released a statement explaining that he had reached this difficult choice after long conversations with the production teams. Jo, who has spent years bringing humour and warmth to viewers across the country, reportedly felt that his presence might add unnecessary strain at a time when both programmes are under public scrutiny.
According to the agency, he “feels deeply responsible for the misunderstandings and controversy that have arisen around him recently, and fully recognises the discomfort viewers are feeling.”
They also addressed the rumours head-on, drawing a clear line. “Allegations claiming he was directly or indirectly involved with an organised crime group or that he accepted expensive gifts are completely untrue,” the statement read.
Despite the firm denial, Jo and the agency have promised to “dispel all suspicions currently raised and return in good health.”
The accusations originated from online posts showing Jo with a man who is alleged to have run illegal gambling websites. The posts also claimed Jo may have promoted the man’s ventures and received extravagant gifts.
As the photos circulated, public concern snowballed, and demands for Jo’s removal from major shows began to grow louder.
Jo’s absence will undoubtedly be felt. As Yoo Jae-suk’s right-hand man on “You Quiz on the Block,” he became known for his charm, gentle humour, and ability to put guests at ease. Watching him step away has been especially emotional for long-time viewers.

His announcement comes just after fellow comedian Park Na-rae revealed she, too, would halt all media activities while she counters a string of serious accusations made by two former managers.
Park has since filed police complaints, accusing them of extortion and strongly denying claims about illegal medical treatments, insisting she believed the person involved was licensed and that she received only routine nutritional injections.
