Kapil Sharma's film Zwigato directed by Nandita Das, has officially made its way to the OTT platform Prime Video, offering audiences a chance to experience this poignant narrative from the comfort of their homes. The movie was first released in theaters on March 17, 2023, and although it garnered critical acclaim, it struggled to achieve commercial success, earning only Rs 1.50 crore in its opening week.
In a heartfelt announcement on social media, Kapil Sharma expressed gratitude for the film’s impact, stating, “One year since Zwigato touched hearts. Grateful for all the love and memories this film has given us. Here’s to stories that stay with you forever! Out tomorrow only on @PrimeVideoIN.” Director Nandita Das also shared her excitement, emphasizing the film's release and its relevance in today’s context.
Set against the backdrop of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Zwigato delves into the life of Manas, portrayed by Kapil Sharma, who finds himself navigating the struggles of a gig economy after losing his stable job as a factory supervisor due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a food delivery worker, he faces the daily grind of managing ratings, penalties, and the constant pursuit of incentives to make ends meet. His journey reflects the broader challenges faced by many during these turbulent times, making the film not just a personal story but also a social commentary.
Supporting Kapil is Shahana Goswami, who plays his wife. Her character takes on various odd jobs, including offering massages to affluent clients, highlighting the lengths to which families must go to survive in a precarious economy. The film poignantly captures the dynamics of a household in crisis, where both partners contribute in their own ways to keep their family afloat.
Despite its lukewarm box office performance, Zwigato resonated with critics who praised its realistic portrayal of contemporary issues and its heartfelt storytelling. Kapil Sharma, in a candid conversation before the film’s release, expressed his perspective on the project, stating that the film’s success was secondary to its ability to connect with audiences. He believed that even if the film didn't perform well commercially, the work and message behind it were of greater importance.
