A year after stepping into Indian politics as the newly elected Member of Parliament from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency, Kangana Ranaut is candidly reassessing her journey. In an interview, she admitted the reality of her role has been sobering—and more challenging than anticipated.
Recalling her initial expectations, Kangana confessed she hoped the MP role would be manageable. Kangana told Times Now, “I was under the impression it would be straightforward. I was told I’d need to attend Parliament for around 60–70 days, and could focus on other work the rest of the time. It sounded reasonable, but the reality is quite the opposite.”
The demanding nature of parliamentary duties, she explained, has been far more intense than she ever foresaw.
Emergency, which was finished before her political debut, has been released since Kangana was sworn in last July. Although there are high hopes for her next Hollywood endeavour, she has not started any new film projects.
The challenges of representing Mandi are unique. Between June 30 and July 1, the area experienced devastating landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts that left 15 people confirmed dead and numerous others missing. On a recent visit, Kangana met with constituents requesting assistance with relief and reconstruction, which are primarily state-related tasks.
She clarified her limitations, stating: “Most relief and restoration falls to the state government. As an MP, I can only relay these issues to the Prime Minister and Home Minister and request greater assistance.”
Kangana also highlighted the expectation on MPs to act as conduits between state and centre. She explained that without direct executive powers, her role primarily involves liaising with deputy commissioners and submitting reports. “We are the vital link between state and central governments, instrumental in facilitating projects and representing grievances,” she said.

Her reflections have not, however, been accepted without criticism. Minister Jagat Singh Negi of Himachal Pradesh said that resigning might be the best course of action if she is unhappy in her position. Her statements seem to avoid her responsibilities, especially when it comes to disaster relief, he said.
Kangana's first year in public office has been much more difficult than she ever expected, providing a stark illustration of the difficulties of political service as she continues her dual journey—navigating both politics and Hollywood.
