Following several delays, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has finally awarded Dhadak 2, which stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in the lead roles, a U/A certification.
The movie did not, however, pass without considerable alterations; 16 significant changes were needed in total before approval was given.
Dhadak 2 is the follow-up to the 2018 romantic drama Dhadak, which debuted Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter to the public. It is directed by Shazia Iqbal and supported by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Officially revealed last year, the follow-up generated a lot of buzz online, particularly following the release of its motion poster, which fans responded favourably to.
The CBFC, however, voiced a number of concerns about the film's content, mainly because of its delicate political, religious, and social allusions.
To avoid any connection to particular public figures, one politically suggestive exchange was reworded. In order to avoid controversy, caste-related terminology was also either toned down or replaced with less offensive language.
The context shifted from religion to morality when the religious phrase "Dharam ka kaam hai" was replaced with the more neutral "Punya ka kaam hai."
The film also included a song featuring a well-known doha (couplet) by poet Tulsidas, which was swapped for a different verse that conveys a message of silent resistance. Another line stating, “3,000 years of backlog will not be cleared in just 70 years,” was considered too direct. It was revised to say, “the backlog of age-old discrimination will not be cleared in just 70 years,” offering a broader and less confrontational perspective.
Other noteworthy changes include the removal of a mystical dog's blue colour in one scene and the removal of 16 seconds from a scene in which a character's father is humiliated.
A black screen took the place of a particularly graphic scene showing violence against a woman. Additionally, the typical disclaimer at the start of the movie has been greatly expanded, now lasting 1 minute and 51 seconds, and is now spoken aloud instead of displayed on screen.
The filmmakers apparently sought to maintain the film's core despite these extensive edits. According to reports, Dhadak 2 will delve into more intricate social issues while examining a new love story.
Fans are anxiously anticipating the official announcement of the movie's release date now that certification has been obtained.
