Akshay Kumar is stepping into uncharted territory with his upcoming film Haiwaan, where he plays a negative character, a rare move for the actor known for his heroic roles. Interestingly, before locking in the decision, Akshay sought the opinion of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The two shared an engaging on-stage conversation at the FICCI FRAMES 2025 event in Mumbai, where they discussed the art of embracing new challenges and the value of versatility in cinema.
Akshay began by saying, “I am doing a film where I play a negative character. I was wondering whether I should do it or not. The film is called Haiwaan, but in the end, I lose. The Haiwaan loses.”
Fadnavis, smiling, was quick to back the idea. “Yes, you should definitely do it. A versatile actor like you should explore all kinds of roles,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.
He went on to elaborate on why he supported Akshay’s decision. “Ultimately, what is an accomplishment? Even in films where the villain loses, the character often leaves a bigger impact than the hero. That is creativity. But do continue doing more films as a hero as well.”
Akshay explained that the choice stemmed purely from instinct. “I felt like doing a negative role hence I am doing it. Mostly I play the hero in the film,” he said.

The exchange revealed a side of Akshay that audiences don’t often see, reflective, experimental, and eager to evolve. Fadnavis’s thoughtful response also showed his understanding of cinema’s creative layers beyond politics or public persona.
Haiwaan marks Akshay’s reunion with Saif Ali Khan after 17 years, their last collaboration being Tashan in 2008. The thriller is directed by Priyadarshan, bringing together a team that has delivered some of Bollywood’s most memorable comedies and dramas.
Produced by KVN Productions in association with Thespian Films, Haiwaan is jointly backed by Venkat K Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn. The film is currently on floors and promises to show Akshay Kumar in a completely new light — one where the hero within him doesn’t win, but the actor certainly does.
