A pregnant woman and her friend died after a pole collapsed on them during road construction work around 4 pm in Bengaluru’s Saddaguntepalya on Monday.

The victims have been identified as Sumathi from Tamil Nadu and Soni Kumari from Bihar, who was four months pregnant. The accident occurred when a JCB machine accidentally struck the light pole, causing it to topple onto the women as they walked along the roadside, TimesNow reported.

The locals informed the police, after which the officials reached the spot and took the JCB driver, Raju, into custody. A case has been registered at Baiyappanahalli Police Station, and an investigation is underway to determine further details.

In a separate incident, a two-year-old boy was killed when a JCB ran over him while playing outside his house in Seegehalli in Kadugodi police station limits on February 21.

According to the police, the accident took place when the boy Pavan Reddy, was playing outside his house while his mother was busy in daily chores. The JCB was being driven recklessly and negligently when the driver failed to notice the boy knocked him down and run over.

The boy was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital but was declared brought dead. His parents, both employees of a private firm, lodged a complaint against the JCB driver, who was subsequently arrested.
