IMD issues yellow alert for Mumbai and several districts in Maharashtra amid intense heatwave

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for six districts, including Mumbai, warning residents about intense heatwaves over the next three days.

The weather department forecasts that temperatures in Mumbai will rise from Monday to Wednesday, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 36 to 37 degrees Celsius.

The Santacruz observatory in suburban Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 34.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26.5 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory in the city recorded a maximum of 34.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27.1 degrees Celsius.

Last week, several parts of Maharashtra experienced unseasonal rain, which added to the discomfort from the heat. The IMD has warned that temperatures could increase by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius over the coming days.

The increasing temperatures may feel even more intense due to high humidity, according to IMD.

Maharashtra is currently facing a strong heatwave and a warning is issued in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts till April 10.

eatwaves are common in Maharashtra from April to June, but experts believe that climate change and global warming have caused them to become more frequent and prolonged in recent years.

Residents are advised to remain indoors during the hottest part of the afternoon, wear light clothing, and stay hydrated to prevent heat-related health issues.
