Triumph, KTM to not hike prices on 400cc and 390cc bikes despite GST jump

Triumph and KTM have decided not to increase ex-showroom prices of their 400cc and 390cc motorcycles, even after GST on bikes above 350cc was raised from 28% to 40%.

While Triumph entered India in 2013, KTM arrived a year earlier in 2012.

In a move that comes as a big relief for buyers in the mid-capacity segment, Triumph Motorcycles and KTM have announced that they will absorb the recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike on motorcycles above 350cc, keeping ex-showroom prices unchanged on their popular models.

The GST rate on bikes over 350cc has been revised from 28% to 40% from September 22, but customers will not feel the pinch on top Triumph and KTM models. However, the 3% compensation cess on such models has been removed.

Triumph said that the Speed 400, Speed T4, Scrambler 400X and the new Thruxton 400 will continue at the same ex-showroom prices. The company, along with its partner Bajaj Auto, is absorbing the higher tax instead of passing it on to customers.
ModelEx-showroom price
Speed 400Rs 2,50,551
Speed T4Rs 1,99,000-2,06,738
Scrambler 400XRs 2,67,731

Thruxton 400Rs 2,74,137

Bajaj Auto Probiking President Manik Nangia said the 400cc range has set benchmarks in design and performance. "Even with the GST increase, we wanted to ensure riding enthusiasts are not discouraged by higher costs," he said.

KTM holds 390cc prices

KTM also confirmed that its 390 Duke, RC 390 and 390 Adventure will see no change in prices. These are among the brand's most popular machines in India and fall under the segment impacted by the GST hike.

For smaller KTMs under 350cc, such as the 160 Duke, 200 Duke and 250 Duke, customers will get the benefit of lower prices after the GST reduction in that category from 28% to 18%.

"By keeping prices unchanged on the 390 range and passing on benefits on the smaller Dukes, we reaffirm our commitment to riders," Nangia added.

KTM, which entered India in 2012, now has nearly half a million customers in the country.
