Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington this week to discuss air defense, long-range weaponry, and energy cooperation. Speaking to reporters in Kyiv on Monday, Zelenskiy said, “We need to discuss the sequence of steps that I want to propose to the president,” with talks scheduled for Friday.
The visit will include meetings with Congress members, military officials, and energy company executives, at Trump’s suggestion. Zelenskiy added that Ukraine aims to explore importing natural gas from the EU, Norway, and Middle Eastern countries, alongside EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
The planned discussions come after Trump’s recent mediation of the Gaza peace deal, as the US president now turns his focus to brokering a resolution in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Addressing the Israeli Knesset, Trump told US envoy Steve Witkoff, “If you don’t mind, we need to first get the Russia deal done. We’ve got to get it done. We will get it done."
Zelenskyy also called US President Donald Trump on Saturday, urging him to help broker peace in Ukraine and citing Trump’s recent success in mediating the Middle East.
