Windows shutdown, Intel outside: How Huawei plans to ‘ditch’ US tech giants

Huawei’s licence for Microsoft Windows is expiring, and it won’t be renewed. The company plans to launch HarmonyOS-powered laptops this year, just like it did with smartphones after losing access to Google’s Android.

Huawei is making big changes to its computers. It is moving away from American technology and developing its own. For years, the Chinese tech company relied on Intel processors and Microsoft’s Windows operating system, just like most computer brands worldwide.The US government has placed strict restrictions on Huawei, stopping American companies like Intel and Microsoft from selling their technology to it. Because of this, Huawei can no longer use Intel processors or the Windows operating system in its computers, according to a report by South China Morning Post.

New chips, no Intel

Huawei has developed its own computer chips, like the Kirin X90, made by its chip unit HiSilicon. This chip recently got a security certification in China, making it more suitable for business and government use. Huawei’s Qingyun series laptops already run on its own Kirin 9000C and 9006C chips instead of Intel’s.
