Android 15

Running out of storage on an Android phone is a problem almost every user faces. Whether you are downloading new apps from Google Play, taking high-resolution photos or recording videos, the dreaded “memory full” pop-up is never far away. Many smartphones still ship with only 128GB of storage, and it does not take long before the space fills up.

The usual fix is to start deleting apps that you do not use often. While this works, it creates another problem. If you reinstall the app later, you may lose your saved progress, data or customised settings. That is where Android 15 has introduced a smarter option – the Archive feature. Instead of completely removing apps, it allows you to offload them from your phone while keeping your data safe in the cloud.

The idea is simple but highly effective. By archiving an app, you remove it from your device’s storage, yet your personal information, settings and progress remain intact. When you reinstall the app, everything comes back just as you left it, including permissions. It is particularly useful for seasonal apps, such as those you use during annual trips, shopping events or specific projects.

To use the Archive feature, head into Settings and open the Apps section. Depending on your device, the exact steps may vary, but most Android phones allow you to search directly for “Apps” in Settings. Once you find the app you want to archive, tap on it and choose the Archive option. The app is then removed from your storage, while your data is securely uploaded.
