Microsoft has officially released the first preview build of the Windows 11 25H2 update, offering early access to select users via the Windows Insider Program. This version marks the next major Windows 11 update for 2025 and is expected to roll out more broadly in the second half of the year.
Eligibility
The 25H2 update is currently available only to Windows Insiders enrolled in the Dev Channel. Users who want early access must join the Windows Insider Program and opt into this channel. The final version will be available to all compatible Windows 11 devices later in 2025.
How to get the Windows 11 25H2 update
To install the preview version, users need to:
1. Enroll their device in the Windows Insider Program.
2. Select the Dev Channel as the update path.
3. Navigate to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.
4. Download and install the latest build labeled as version 25H2.
Once installed, the system will reboot and apply the update using a new method that minimizes downtime.
New features and improvements
One of the key highlights of the 25H2 build is the smaller update size—about 40% lighter than earlier versions. Microsoft says this results in faster installation and less storage usage. Additionally, this version uses the shared servicing branch that enables smoother delivery of updates using “enablement packages” (eKB). This is the same mechanism Microsoft uses for monthly updates, now being applied to major annual updates as well.
The update also resets the support lifecycle:
• Enterprise and Education editions will receive 36 months of updates.
• Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions will follow a 24-month cycle.
Windows 11 25H2 shares its core system code with version 24H2, ensuring compatibility and streamlined performance across devices.
