Microsoft has decided to can the GPT Builder feature in CoPilot Pro for consumers. The tech giant is retiring the feature only 3 months after launching it for CoPilot Pro consumers because it thinks that the GPT Builder is not viable enough for consumers.
Microsoft will remove GPT Builder for consumers from July 10. The associated GPTs and data will be removed by July 14.
CoPilot Pro: Microsoft’s reason for retiring GPT Builder
With the GPT Builder tool, CoPilot Pro users can build and configure customised GPTs. But Microsoft wants to push GPT use for commercial and enterprise scenarios and not for consumer one.
In a dedicated webpage titled ‘GPT Builder is being retired’, Microsoft said:
“We are continuing to evaluate our strategy for consumer Copilot extensibility and are prioritizing core product experiences, while remaining committed to developer opportunities. To this end, we are shifting our focus on GPTs to Commercial and Enterprise scenarios and are stopping GPT efforts in consumer Copilot.”
What happens to Copilot Pro subscribers' data collected by GPT Builder?
“Copilot Pro subscribers' data that was collected by Copilot GPT builder will be deleted,” said Microsoft. Once deleted, the custom GPTs cannot be retrieved by CoPilot Pro users.
What can CoPilot Pro users do about their GPTs?
Microsoft is giving CoPilot Pro users who created a CoPilot Pro GPT the option to save their custom instructions. For this, users need to first open their GPT in edit mode, go to the configure tab and then “copy the instructions and save them elsewhere for reference”.
