Meta to introduce Community Notes on Threads for improved fact-checking

Meta is shifting from professional fact-checking to a community-driven content moderation system, similar to X, where users can anonymously submit notes to see if the post is factually correct. If the submitted note is rated as helpful, it will appear under it to notify all viewers.

Meta has announced plans to replace traditional fact-checkers in favor of the X-like Community Notes feature. This move comes as the platform continues rolling out popular features and updates on its social media apps, such as Instagram and Threads. This change is modeled after a similar feature was introduced on X (formerly Twitter) and could be a step towards all social media platforms adopting an improved content moderation system.

Community Notes on Threads: Key details

As spotted by The Verge, developer and researcher Alessandro Paluzzi has stated that the Community Note feature is already hidden in the Threads app for iPhone. Users can write a note about any post on Threads with this option, which will appear under the post if rated as helpful. Moreover, the platform reiterates that the ‘note is anonymous’ and redirects users to a support article on Instagram with more details about the feature.

The whole feature is not dissimilar from how X uses Community Notes, which was initially called ‘Birdwatch’ on Twitter before Elon Musk acquired the firm and renamed it. Paluzzi has also shared screenshots of the Community Notes feature on Threads, providing insights into its functionality, where Threads users will get an option to start drafting a note. Threads will also let you know that your note is anonymous before you submit it.
