Karnataka forensic department turns to digital tools to identify deepfakes, analyse smartwatch data

 Karnataka's Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories (DFSL) is planning to leverage advanced technology to tackle rising cybercrimes. It will help DFSL to analyse and present digital evidence in court and to improve conviction rates.

Karnataka police has decided to deploy advanced digital tools, including deepfake detection, smartwatch data examination, drone forensics, and mobile phone analysis in a bid to tackle rising cybercrimes.

Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories (DFSL), Karnataka, officials told Moneycontrol that they are leveraging advanced technology to help analyse, certify and present digital evidence in court and also improve conviction rates.

"We need to enhance our technological capabilities as we anticipate a surge in deepfake cases linked to criminal activities. Our primary responsibility is to certify digital evidence, which helps improve conviction rates. For the first time, we will be deploying digital tools for deepfake video examination and smartwatch data analysis," Divya V Gopinath, Director of the State Forensic Science Laboratory told Moneycontrol.
