Microsoft study has found that 65% of Indians used generative AI (GenAI) in 2024, more than twice the global average. The findings are part of Microsoft’s Global Online Safety Survey 2024, which analyzed AI usage trends based on responses from 15,000 teens (aged 13-17) and adults across 15 countries.
AI usage trends in India
Millennials (aged 25-44) emerged as the leading demographic in AI adoption, with 84% using AI tools—an increase of 15% from 2023. The study also found that Indians primarily use AI for translations, work-related tasks, and education.
Concerns around AI adoption
Despite its widespread adoption, AI-related risks remain a concern. The study identified online abuse (76%), deepfakes (74%), scams (73%), and AI hallucinations (70%) as key risks. Over 80% of respondents also raised concerns about AI’s impact on minors.
Parental awareness and safety measures
The survey highlighted growing awareness among Indian parents regarding online safety. About 78% of parents believe their teenagers have faced online risks, and 61% feel prepared to discuss AI-related safety challenges. Additionally, 82% of Indian teens reported encountering online risks.
Microsoft’s AI safety measures
To address AI-related risks, Microsoft has introduced a six-pillar strategy that includes enhanced safety measures, digital watermarking for verifying media authenticity, and collaboration with governments and industry stakeholders. The company has also launched the Microsoft Family Safety Toolkit, providing resources to help families navigate AI-related challenges and promote safer digital experiences for children.
