Losing a phone can be stressful, but losing one that’s set to silent mode makes recovery even harder. A recent incident in Mumbai shows how Google’s Find My Device feature can turn an impossible situation into a relief story.
A commuter accidentally left his phone charging in the back seat of a cab on the way to the airport. By the time he realized, the cab had already driven off. Calls to the number went unanswered, since the device was on silent with vibration turned off.
“The panic wasn’t just about the phone itself, it was about the data — important documents, work chats, and personal photos,” the commuter wrote on Linkedin.
Fortunately, Google’s Find My Device offered a way out. From another device, the user took three quick steps:
–Locked the phone remotely to prevent any misuse of data.
–Displayed a message on the lock screen with an alternate contact number.
–Activated the “Play Sound” feature, which forces the phone to ring loudly for several minutes, even if it’s on silent mode.
This final step made all the difference. The cab driver, alerted by the ringtone, noticed the phone and called the number shown on the screen. Thanks to his honesty, the phone was later returned safely.
The incident highlights a tool many smartphone users rarely test until it’s too late. Both Google’s Find My Device and Apple’s Find My services allow users to ring, lock, locate, or even erase their devices remotely.
Experts suggest that users should take a few moments to check whether these features are enabled on their devices and ensure their important files are synced to the cloud.
As the commuter summed it up: “The ‘Play Sound’ feature did what my calls couldn’t. It turned silence into a lifesaver.”
