Google Maps may finally have a real challenger. Alibaba’s mapping service, Amap, is going global with the launch of its international AutoSDK — a software toolkit designed to help carmakers build smarter in-car navigation systems. The move marks a major step for Amap as it takes on Google Maps’ dominance in global navigation.

Amap, which operates under Alibaba Group, said the new version of its AutoSDK will support carmakers in developing navigation and cockpit systems for overseas markets. The international rollout covers more than 170 countries across Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America, and supports 19 major languages.

The company said it developed this global version to help Chinese automakers better adapt to international markets. Many Chinese car brands have struggled to customise their navigation systems for foreign users. With Amap’s new toolkit, they can now build localised, feature-rich maps faster and more efficiently.

The expansion also comes at a time when Chinese car exports are booming. In 2024, China shipped nearly 5 million passenger cars, and that number could double by 2030. Amap hopes to ride this wave by becoming the go-to navigation partner for these automakers abroad.
