A new trend called the “Banana AI Saree” has taken over Instagram, powered by Google Gemini’s Nano Banana image-editing feature. The viral trend allows users to transform their selfies into retro Bollywood-inspired portraits, but authorities have cautioned participants about potential risks associated with sharing personal data.

The saree trend builds on the earlier “Nano Banana 3D Figurine” craze, which converted ordinary photos into toy-like figurines placed in vibrant packaging. The latest variant shifts focus to cinematic aesthetics, producing portraits that echo the style of 90s Bollywood.
Participants use Gemini’s editing tool to generate images with chiffon sarees blowing in the wind, retro film grain textures, and golden-hour lighting. Some are also experimenting with polka-dot designs, floral prints, and darker evening looks. The appeal lies in the ability to relive a vintage cinematic style while keeping the edits shareable across platforms like Instagram and X.
Warning issued by IPS officer
The popularity of the trend has raised cybersecurity concerns. IPS officer VC Sajjanar issued a public advisory urging caution. In his message on X (formerly Twitter), he warned that fake apps and websites are imitating Gemini’s editing tool to lure users into uploading photos and personal details.
“Be cautious with trending topics on the internet! Falling into the trap of the ‘Nano Banana’ craze can be risky. If you share personal information online, scams are bound to happen. With just one click, the money in your bank accounts can end up in the hands of criminals,” Sajjanar wrote.
He further noted that once personal data reaches fraudulent platforms, recovery is extremely difficult. His advice emphasized digital responsibility: “Your data, your money — your responsibility.”
How to join safely
For users who still want to participate in the viral saree edits, experts recommend sticking to official sources. The process involves opening the Google Gemini app or Gemini AI Studio, logging in with a Google account, and selecting the “Banana” option within the image editing tool. A clear selfie can then be uploaded with prompts such as “90s film aesthetic, chiffon saree, golden-hour lighting” to generate results safely.
